Our Role in God's Plan
If our church shut down tomorrow, would we be missed by the community we are called to serve?
This is a great question that we should repeatedly be asking ourselves as a local body of Christ. As we consider what following Christ and His example means to us, I think it is about our role both as individuals and as a church.
2 Corinthians 4:5 puts it this way: “For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.”
I believe that our primary purpose is to share the gospel from a heart of love and a lifestyle of service.
It’s been said that people don’t care how much you know unless they know how much you care. To share Christ with others without loving and serving them doesn’t yield much fruit. To serve others without sharing about Jesus is often nothing more than a social gospel devoid of God. But when we combine the two of these, God is glorified and honored by our words and actions as we become incarnational representatives of Jesus to a lost and hurting world. This Christmas season, I encourage you to bring love and service to people, beautifully wrapped in the gospel.
As a church, we are wanting to impact our community, and have identified some needs we would ask you to consider participating in.
1. Supply a Christmas food box for those in need by identifying an individual or family in need. There are three options here: 1. Fill a box of food and deliver it; 2. Fill a box and drop it off at the church to be delivered; or 3. Be available to be a food box deliverer. For more information contact Bob & Linda Hurley @ pmmesa1@aol.com or pick up a half-sheet flyer from the information table.
2. Annually we take an offering on Christmas Eve. This year we decided to have that offering benefit Meridian Elementary School students who are in need of some basics like socks and underwear, as well as City Light Ministries for Women and Children. The first $500 received from the special offering will go to Meridian Elementary. Any amount from $500 – $1000 will go to City Light Ministries. Anything over $1000 will be split evenly between Meridian Elementary and City Light.
3. We are also planning to have a Giving Tree available so you can purchase presents for local children who otherwise won’t have anything on Christmas morning.
This year as you celebrate the birth of Jesus, our Savior and Lord, I pray that the Gospel will be shared and seen in our loving service of others.
